transplant shock

The check to growth caused by transplanting or outplanting. The shock varies in severity depending on the size of the crown, how much of the root system is killed during lifting (in bare-rooted trees) handling and transport, site factors, time of planting, the way in which the tree is planted and aftercare. If very severe, the tree is killed.
