crown retrenchment

Die-back of the outer crown, giving rise to deadwood and stag-heads. A tree’s crown retrenches after it reaches late maturity, or owing to some prejudicial episode (root damage, summer drought, insect infestation etc.) from which the tree may or may not recover.
