The National Trust was founded in 1895 ‘to act as a guardian for the nation in the acquisition and protection of threatened coastline, countryside and buildings’. The Trust is the largest voluntary conservation organization in Europe and the second-biggest landowner in the UK after the Forestry Commission. Scotland has an independent trust.
